About the Urban Lumber Company

Storm damage can be salvaged
The Urban Lumber Company is a hardwood lumber retailer that produces beautiful, quality lumber from downed trees in the Kansas City area. We are counting on our community to understand that trees, which take a long time to grow, shouldn't be wasted. It is the mission of the Urban Lumber Company to reduce the waste of hardwood lumber in the Kansas City area while it simultaneously produces an exotic local product that is both interesting to work with and an efficient use of our precious natural resources.

Here are some stastics about trees, lumber, and life in the USA
taken from Harvesting Urban Timber, by Sam Sherrill.

In 1999 the US consumed about 19 billion board feet of hardwood lumber.

About 33% of the nations green waste is usable for lumber and it is estimated that 3 to 4 billion board feet of potential lumber is thrown away each year. That means that the US throws away an amount of lumber equal about 25% of what it consumes.

8 out of 10 americans live in an area considered "urban" according to the US Forest service. In those urban areas, there exists an estimated 74 billion trees, an amount equal to about 25% of the 319 billion live trees growing in commercial timberland. This means that of all the wood that is commercially planted and cultivated in this country, an amount equal to about 25% is similarly available within what we would consider to be urban areas- also potentially harvestable.
